Session 2: Perspectives of burnout

A coloured coded summary of the fifteen factors of burnout.

In the first category (green), the factors can be summarised as ‘prolonged overload characteristics’:

  • Excessive training
  • Inadequate recovery
  • Competing life and/or interpersonal stress.

In the second category (yellow), the factors can be summarised as ‘individual characteristics’:

  • Tendency for anxiety
  • Unidimensional athletic identity
  • High levels of self-criticism (e.g. perfectionism)
  • Limited coping skills or resources (e.g. appropriate goals, relaxation).

In the third category (red), the factors can be summarised as ‘situational characteristics’:

  • Pressure from parents
  • Demanding coaching behaviours
  • Feeling trapped in sport
  • Limited control over circumstances
  • Lack of support
  • Organisational/media expectations
  • Living up to earlier success
  • Constant monitoring and evaluation.
