In the first category (green), the factors can be summarised as ‘prolonged overload characteristics’:
- Excessive training
- Inadequate recovery
- Competing life and/or interpersonal stress.
In the second category (yellow), the factors can be summarised as ‘individual characteristics’:
- Tendency for anxiety
- Unidimensional athletic identity
- High levels of self-criticism (e.g. perfectionism)
- Limited coping skills or resources (e.g. appropriate goals, relaxation).
In the third category (red), the factors can be summarised as ‘situational characteristics’:
- Pressure from parents
- Demanding coaching behaviours
- Feeling trapped in sport
- Limited control over circumstances
- Lack of support
- Organisational/media expectations
- Living up to earlier success
- Constant monitoring and evaluation.
