In part (a) the surface is filled with irregular hexagons which fit together without leaving any spaces between them. Within most of the hexagons is a lighter coloured irregular polygon, but some contain small dots and a few large circles. A scale shows that the distance across one of the irregular hexagons is a little less than 50 micro m.

Part (b) shows a surface covered by an irregular grid formed from layers of a finely textured substance, with large roughly oval spaces scattered throughout it. A scale shows that the layers are about 100 micro m across, and the spaces are typically between 300 and 500 micro m across.

Part (c) appears to be formed from layers of a finely textured substance, as in part (b), but instead of forming a grid with large spaces, the layers have been folded and packed close together, without any significant space between them. A scale shows that the layers are about 50 micro m across.
