8.2 Using signposting phrases
As part of writing effective paragraphs that lead the reader through your text, you will need to include signposting phrases. You will practise identifying signposting phrases from within a piece of writing in the next activity.
Activity 11
Read through the following excerpt from Tommy’s SWOT analysis of the article about Greggs (Cartmell, 2024). Click on each of the parts of the text that are highlighted in yellow and read about how these signposts guide the reader through Tommy’s case study analysis.
Discussion
This activity showed how signposting language can be used to guide the reader in your text. Signposting indicates to the reader what the text is about, what each paragraph is about and how the information is organised in the text (e.g. from general to particular).
