1.6 Summary

This section has set the scene for projects by describing organisations and the players – sponsor, champion, client, customer, owner and other stakeholders. It showed how organisations can go about identifying their mission and objectives, how those objectives and the strategies to achieve them can be explored and refined in a structured way, how problems can be analysed and then, broadly, how the feasibility of various possible actions can be determined. It is then up to management to decide which actions to pursue.

Having studied this section, you should be able to:

  • define, in your own words, what a project is
  • name and define the chief roles various people can assume in respect to proposals and projects
  • explain the purpose of a mission statement
  • define and carry out a simple SWOT analysis
  • explain and carry out a Pareto analysis of a problem
  • explain the role of cause and effect diagrams
  • generate simple matrix diagrams to relate objectives to strategies
  • relate all of these tools to the process of organisational planning
  • explain how quality is improved when a structured approach to planning is used, ensuring that mission, objectives and strategies are clearly identified
  • set acceptable requirements for proposed projects.
