The Roça Sundy hotel
It is not just communities as a whole that are focusing on sustainability. Hotel groups are too. The Roça Sundy hotel is on Principe; a small island in the Gulf of Guinea in Africa. In 2026, the Rocas – including this one – were given World Heritage Site recognition by UNESCO. This hotel, in the Principe Collection, is based around two restored plantation houses, where slavery was used to grow and harvest cocoa. Now ‘every stay here helps to support local initiatives, protect the island’s unique ecosystems and foster community well-being. In this way we hope to make it a part of the island’s positive future, without forgetting its past’ (Principe Collection, nd). The group as a whole says it is very involved in training (as the largest employer on Principe), offers scholarships and promotes school development, protects agriculture and highlights sustainable and seasonality of local food and the importance of the environment (turtles, trees and birds) as well as sponsoring clean-up initiatives.
