Fashion and the environment

Updated Wednesday, 27th January 2021

There is a growing awareness that fashion – and particularly fast fashion – is environmentally unsustainable.

Throughout its life cycle, clothing can have a negative effect on the environment, but how do we change this? It is not only manufacturers and retailers that need to change their behaviour, but also us as customers. Open University Professor Claudia Eckert gives a brief overview of the history of clothing use and behaviours and discusses the issues we are now facing associated with fashion production, use and care. The session also features a Q&A with colleagues about what we can do to play our part in alleviating these environmental impacts.
