In this view of a wide valley in the Lake District, a narrow stream meanders between small bright green fields, occasional rocky outcrops, and trees and shrubs. The colours of the landscape suggest early autumn – trees still in leaf, but tawny and russet colours on the hillsides suggest dying bracken. The valley is bathed in bright sunlight, but strong cloud shadows darken the encircling mountains. At the foot of the slope on the left a road skirts the valley floor and disappears into the distance over a low knoll in the centre of the image. Two or three small cottages are just discernible at the roadside. A purplish shadowed mountain sweeps in from the right with a stream coming down it steeply as waterfalls, and a further line of mountains, blue-green in the distance, are silhouetted against a threateningly cloudy sky.
