This figure is satirical cartoon. The River Thames is represented as father figure to three terrible diseases, diphtheria, scrofula, and cholera, which were spread via the river water. The ‘Fair City of London’ is depicted as a woman dressed in white and wearing a crown, and represents the highest social class of the city, and how far removed they considered themselves to be from the diseases of the lower classes. Father Thames by contrast, appears dark, oily and decrepit, with distorted features. He has become what industry has made him, and from the pollution by both industrial and human wastes, he has fathered three wretched-looking children. The ‘Fair City’ looks down her nose at all of them.
