Introduction

This week you will consider physical health, emotional well-being and finances – the personal resources you can draw on. These may feel unrelated to your career, yet finding clarity and addressing issues in these areas can make a big difference to how you feel. You will consider how the ‘I am’ part of the career resilience model from Week 4 helps you to develop and thrive, and start to look at the ‘I can’ part – what you believe you can do.

As before, continue to use a notebook or the online toolkit to write down your thoughts and to complete the activities.

In Weeks 2 and 4 of the course, you learned about who you are and how the relationships you have with your family and wider community could support career resilience. This week, you'll focus on how physical health and activity levels, emotional well-being, and finances all have an impact, too. We’re all aware of healthy lifestyles, so why do so many of us ignore public health messages?
One explanation is that people can believe that health is largely determined by external factors or can feel too overwhelmed to act. But tiny, incremental changes together can have a major impact, as was shown by the GB Cycling Team in the 2016 Olympics. And for those of us who aren't Olympic athletes, there's now overwhelming medical evidence to support the connections between physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

  • explain the importance of maintaining physical health
  • understand how financial insecurity can affect your resilience
