Figure 3 is a schematic diagram representing a lithium atom. It shows a nucleus (a circle) at the centre, with two concentric rings that represent its electron shells. Two electrons are shown in the inner shell, and one in the outer. The nucleus is labelled ‘atomic nucleus containing a proton of charge +1’. The outer electron is labelled as having a charge of -1.
