Professional biography
Annika Mombauer is Professor of Modern European history. She joined The Open University in 1998. She studied history at the Westfälische-Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, Germany, and at the University of Sussex where she was awarded a D. Phil in history in 1998. Her research interests are in the First World War and its diplomatic and military origins, and she has published widely in this field. Her latest book, The Causes of the First World War: The Long Blame Game, will be published by Routledge in 2024. Among her other publications is an edited document collection (The Origins of the First World War: diplomatic and military documents), published by Manchester University Press in 2013, which brings together more than 400 international primary sources which highlight diplomatic and military decision-making in the immediate pre-war years and during the July Crisis of 1914. In 2014, her book on the July Crisis, Die Julikrise. Europas Weg in den Ersten Weltkrieg, was published by the Beck Verlag in Munich.
