Dr Linda Buckley
Linda graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in theology in 1967 and taught English literature and religious studies at St. Anne’s College, Ibadan, Western Nigeria from 1969 to 1971, where she developed a keen interest in traditional Yoruba culture and the impact of British colonialism.
On returning to England, she taught in the adult education department at the Sheppey School, Kent before being appointed head of Religious Education at Glenlola Collegiate School (Bangor, Co. Down) in 1973. She began teaching interdisciplinary arts and music modules with The Open University in 1993.
She obtained an interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree in the arts from The Open University (1992), an MA in music from Queen’s University, Belfast (1996), and a PhD in music from The Open University (2004). Her research has included work on Beethoven’s opera and the reflection of Renaissance politics in early opera, as well as French composer Alfred Bruneau and the relationship between politics, music and literature in late nineteenth-century France.
Her current research focuses on the first performances of ‘Carmen’ in Ireland and her article on this topic has recently been published in Carmen Abroad: Bizet’s Opera on the Global Stage (ed. Richard Langham Smith, Cambridge University Press).
She is currently editing a book on local history written by her late husband.
She has maintained her interest in Nigerian history and culture throughout her career and was pleased to have the opportunity to explore the Benin Bronzes in preparation for teaching the topic as part of AA100 (The arts past and present). She has recently concentrated on a body of stories originating in oral tradition, now collected by Edo authors, which record the devastating and long-lasting effects of the British attack on Benin City and the theft of the Bronzes in 1897. An article on this topic is forthcoming.
