Toni hasbeen involved in the waste management industry since 1992, and hasresearched the environmental and occupational impacts of waste management throughout this time.She has had funding from the Environment Agency, Defra, NERC and Zero Waste Scotland to research issues including waste collection frequency, air quality around waste plants, emissions, environmental impacts of recycling facilities and the health issues associated with waste management. Toni is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering; researching waste management emissions and public health issues. Toni has researched the issues surrounding bioaerosols, health and waste management since 1993, and worked at the Open University since 2001. From 1996-2000 she took part in a EU BIOMED2 project with eight partner countries on waste management worker exposure and health. From 1998-2002 she completed a major study on recycling facilities in England and Wales concerning air quality (including evaluation of concentrations of bioaerosols, particulates, VOCs etc.) and potential impacts on the health of operatives for the Environment Agency. In 2004 she was co-author of an industry guide on health and safety for composting sites (revised in 2012) and also participated in a health review of waste management for DETR. Since 2002 her research has focused on particulates, bioaerosols and environmental impacts associated with a variety of waste sites, where she has carried out regular monitoring at some thirty sites and so has extensive experience in this area. At the Open University, she has developed a purpose built laboratory to further particulates and bioaerosols research. In 2009 she edited the national standardised protocol for monitoring bioaerosols at open compost facilities (the Afor Protocol) and in 2010 an equivalence document. Also in 2009 she researched guidance on residual waste collection and in 2011 further work has been carried out on food waste collection.From 2015 she has assisted the Environment Agency with M9 (Environmental Monitoring of bioaerosols at Waste Facilities) and has also completed research for the Environment Agency on emissions from intensive farming.She is currently Chair of CIWM’s special interest group on health and safety in waste management and Secretary to the national Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) forum.
