The physical world: quantum: Track 1

Featuring: Video Video Audio Audio

This album examines the revolution in scientific thinking that overthrew classical physics in favour of quantum physics. Called the crown of the twentieth century, quantum mechanics is a blueprint for how everything behaves on an atomic level. Seven video tracks presented by Robert Llewellyn offer a beginner's guide to quantum. He revisits the battle of ideas fought between Einstein and Bohr, explains the importance of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Thought Experiment, and looks to the future of quantum technology. This material forms part of the Open University course S207 The physical world.

Track   Title Description
1 The physical world: quantum    An introduction to this album. Play now The physical world: quantum
2 The quantum revolution    Science's best explanation for the mysterious principles at the root of existence. Without quantum theory, there'd be no mobile phones, computers or DVDs today. Play now The quantum revolution
3 Einstein and Bohr    The clash between the two giants of twentieth century physics. Einstein is a household name, but who was Neils Bohr? Play now Einstein and Bohr
4 The uncertainty principle    How subatomic particles behave. A simple explanation for one of the fundamental features of quantum theory. Play now The uncertainty principle
5 Einstein's objections to quantum theory    The uncertain universe versus the deterministic universe. Bohr's ideas had great success, but in the 1930s, they challenged the accepted laws of nature. Play now Einstein's objections to quantum theory
6 Einsteins' challenge to quantum theory    The Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) Thought Experiment represents Einstein's attempt to disprove quantum theory. Play now Einsteins' challenge to quantum theory
7 Testing EPR    Methods used to test the Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) Thought Experiment in 1997 in Geneva. Play now Testing EPR
8 The century of quantum technology    The unsolved mysteries of quantum mechanics and the quantum gadgets of the future. Play now The century of quantum technology
