The video in the Introduction referred to the monarch butterfly, (Danaus plexippus), and its migration routes in North and Central America. Studying the monarchs over such a huge area requires a large number of people, almost all of whom are volunteers. The ways in which scientific information about the butterflies is collected is illustrated in the following case study.
