Large scale change

DR DAVID ROBINSON

The Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula covers an area similar to that of Jamaica. In March 2008, the ice shelf began to break up. A Twin Otter plane from the British Antarctic Survey flew over the ice shelf and took these dramatic pictures. Flying low over the massive cracks in the ice sheet revealed the scale of the breakup. Large pieces of broken ice were now floating on their side. Since 2008, the breakup has continued.
