Figure 1a) Aerial photograph of Rekjanes peninsular, with land mass horizontally aligned across the centre of the image and ocean at the top and bottom. The land has extensive snow covering. In the middle of the peninsula is a horizontally-aligned, undulating long black shape with bright orange and red in its centre. A plume of smoke is emitted from the centre of this.

Figure 1b) A photograph of a robotic rover on the surface of Mars. The rover has four wheels, a roughly cubic body, and a vertical projection with a smaller cubic box at the top, with a camera lens showing from the front. The martian landscape is red-brown, dusty with some rock outcrops and loose boulders.
