Online Summer School 2021
Online Summer School 2021

An OpenSTEM online summer school providing you with an introduction to several analytical techniques in biology, chemistry and health science via the following online investigations.

  • Investigation 1: Identification of counterfeit pharmaceuticals by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Investigation 2: Analysis of pharmaceuticals in waters using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
  • Investigation 3: Quantifying and characterising microorganisms in effluent: (a) Biochemical Oxygen Demand, (b) Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis spectroscopy), (c) Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

The analytical method for each technique was covered as well as general techniques such as preparing calibration standards and constructing a calibration curve. Investigations were completed online, either via an interactive screen experiment or via remote instrumentation (HPLC and IR), which included recording data and observations, plotting graphs and interpreting results.

To gain the badge, you must have successfully completed at least four of the five techniques used in the investigations and the associated quizzes.
