Phosphorus compounds are hugely important in nature, for example deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a polymer of alternating phosphate and deoxyribose groups. In this section you will see that phosphorus forms firstly relatively simple anions such as phosphate, PO4 3-. Then you will explore the chemistry of polyphosphates such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that was mentioned in Section 2.1.1.
