How would you respond to social discrimination?

Welcome to the world of Virtual Inclusion. Get into the shoes of three young people facing discrimination at school, and see how you can help promote social inclusion.

New innovations like '360 degree videos' allow us to not just be passive observers of a scene but look around and interact with characters as if we were really there! These engaging experiences can help us build a greater connection with and empathy for all sorts of different people and places.

Virtual Inclusion is an interactive feature that offers you the chance to experience a 'day in the life' of three different young people facing discrimination and learn how you can promote social inclusion in your own life!

Immerse yourself in the virtual scenarios 

Select the image below to launch the world of Virtual Inclusion. If you are viewing this on a desktop PC, you will need to move your mouse around to experience the full 360 degree view. You can choose between three different characters each facing social discrimination in their lives. At the end of each, there will be a choice for you to make as to how to respond to this discrimination either as a viewer or the character.

The app will allow you to experience these scenarios both in 3D "Virtual Reality" mode and 2D "Classic" mode on your mobile or tablet. These can be viewed using a VR headset or as a finger controlled interactive 360 video.

Introduction to childhood studies and child psychology

What influences children's development? How is childhood changing? How important are society and culture in understanding this change? This introductory module offers a fascinating insight into the lives of children and young people. It brings together approaches from anthropology, sociology and psychology, to provide a complete account of some of the complex influences that shape children's experiences. You will investigate topics central to the lives of children and young people, from birth to 18 years, and explore their emotional, physical, intellectual, social and cultural development. You'll be introduced to these thought-provoking topics through audio, video and interactive online materials.

Equality, participation and inclusion: learning from each other

This module is for anyone interested in issues of access for children and young people in diverse social and educational contexts. It supports you in engaging with differing perspectives on equality, participation and inclusion, and in developing your own perspectives. You will address the dimensions of disability, disaffection and learning difficulty in the context of wider diversity across the breadth of childhood and youth services. It asks what constitutes good participatory and inclusive practice. A range of video case studies from early years to late teens, with an emphasis on education and learning, illustrate the key themes and issues.
