3 How to reflect on your learning

It is important to get into the habit of actively reflecting on your learning. This is an important skill in its own right, and will help you get the most from your study time. So, as you work though each video, we suggest that when you are writing your Learning Journal you focus your thoughts and structure your notes around three areas:

1 The process of learning from the video

For example, you might ask yourself:

  • How do I feel about learning from the video and a different type of text – that is, film?

  • What am I enjoying or finding most difficult?

  • How am I making notes? Am I being an active learner?

  • What might I do differently next time?

2 The content of the video

For example, you might ask yourself:

  • What have I learned about the concept and practice of surveillance?

  • How does this illustrate the ambiguous boundaries and tensions between social welfare and crime control strategies?

  • Are there any particular concepts I am finding particularly important or difficult, or that I might need help with?

  • How do I feel about what’s being said or shown?

3 The evidence in the video

You will be asked at every stage of the course to reflect critically on evidence and the way it is used, so here we suggest you think about the following questions:

  • What kinds of evidence have I encountered in the video?

  • What have I learned about what counts as evidence and how evidence is used?

  • How might I use evidence in my studies?

Summary

When working with the video clips:

  • watch the video clip in Section 4.1 on learning from a video

  • watch each video all the way through

  • watch each video more than once, noting different ways of thinking about the content

  • watch actively

  • make selective notes

  • look for evidence and how it is used

  • reflect on your learning.
