Evergreen’s employee-owned, for-profit companies are based locally and hire locally. They create meaningful green jobs and keep precious financial resources within the Greater University Circle neighborhoods. Worker-owners at Evergreen earn a living wage and build equity in the firms as owners of the business".

It was initiated by government, non-governmental organisations/charities, and researchers, scientists & educators and encourages people to participate through organising & campaigning and co-operatives. Evergreen Cooperatives is local in orientation and concerned with economy and neighbourhood & community.

It was launched in 2008 and is ongoing.
