Linear statistical modelling free course icon Level

Science, Maths & Technology

Linear statistical modelling

This module covers statistical modelling where a response variable depends on one or several explanatory variables: such as how well patients respond to a treatment, given their age and disease severity; or how different strains of wheat compare when grown in various conditions. Taking a practical approach, you'll use real problems and data to stimulate analyses and their interpretation. Statistical tools are introduced, and use of the statistical software package, Genstat (supplied) is taught. You need a reasonable understanding of basic statistical ideas, as developed by (M248). You'll learn to use the most important methods of analysing data ? a skill that too few people have.

Terrestrial ecosystems free course icon Level

Science, Maths & Technology

Terrestrial ecosystems

This module considers the interactions between terrestrial organisms and their environments ? that together form ecosystems, ranging from simple microbial communities to tropical rainforests. We could even consider earth as a whole ecosystem. The module will introduce you to key ecosystem concepts, and develop your understanding of the stability and resilience of ecosystems to disturbances such as disease and pollution. You'll learn how ecosystem function depends on exchanges of water, energy and nutrients; and gain practical experience with current research techniques, including real-time monitoring and computer modelling. Finally, you'll gain experience in writing professional-style reports on ecological systems.
