In studying this certificate, you'll gain a foundation in the main branches of chemistry and an appreciation of chemistry in all aspects of our lives. You'll explore synthesis of organic compounds, spectroscopic analysis, the Periodic Table and reactivity, bonding and molecular shape, thermodynamics and kinetics. Online and remote experiments, combined with a short laboratory-based residential school at our Milton Keynes campus, will build your investigative and practical skills. This certificate is particularly useful if you're required to teach chemistry up to Key Stage 4, but your background is in another science, or if you're thinking about training to be a chemistry teacher.
You'll study in greater depth, to expand your development as an engineer, the underpinning science and mathematics; engineering analysis; design; environmental and economic context; and engineering practice introduced in earlier engineering study. Further development of reflective engineering practice is integral throughout. You'll discuss aspects of your study with other students and your tutor, conduct remote experiments using our award-winning OpenEngineering remote laboratories, and use industry-recognised software.

This is a practical science module with activities in astronomy, physics and planetary science. It builds on your previous study, adding a vital element of experimental work. The investigations cover aspects as diverse as quantum mechanics; properties of electrons; planetary atmospheres and surface processes; and the structure and contents of the Milky Way. You'll use remote equipment ranging from an X-ray spectrometer to an optical telescope in Tenerife or a radio telescope in Milton Keynes. You'll build your experience and expertise in practical investigation, including observation, hypothesising and reporting skills. An exciting project develops team-working skills critical to collaborative scientific enquiry.
is an innovative module covering the biology and diversity of whole organisms from an evolutionary perspective. Interactions between diverse examples of cooperating and/or competing organisms, including predators and prey, are explored along with their changing environments. Various plants, animals and fungi are used to illustrate how adaptation in the physiology and behaviour of organisms contributes to survival. An important component is an investigative strand, in which you will undertake real and virtual experiments. Through this study and investigative combination, you will develop practical and analytical skills using at-home and on-screen interactive experiments to generate and analyse your own unique data sets.
Spacecraft missions play a vital role in the exploration of the solar system and the more distant universe. This module introduces, in depth, the methods of conducting scientific measurements in the space environment and the technologies behind spacecraft and space missions. The module makes extensive use of online remote experiments and facilities to develop your practical scientific skills and to allow you to engage in collaborative team-working activities that are the hallmark of spacecraft operations. The module is good preparation for further academic research in space science, and develops skills and knowledge that are relevant to employment in the space sector.
