Design for engineers

People encounter designed products every day: chairs, buildings, medicines, appliances, clothes, vehicles, robots and much else ? just look around you. Design is central to the creation of all these products. Designers and engineers often work closely in teams to translate ideas into useful and required products. Knowledge of the design process is essential for successful engineering. The module combines academic study with practical work online and offline and aims to introduce you to the essential skills, knowledge and practices of design.

Core engineering A

Engineering materials; statics; and electricity generation and storage feature as core engineering topics. This module will introduce you, in an engineering context, to underpinning scientific principles, mathematical techniques and design methodologies. You'll build your confidence in framing problems, addressing design challenges and formulating engineering solutions. The development of reflective engineering practice is integral throughout. You'll share and discuss aspects of your study with other students; conduct remote experiments using our award-winning OpenEngineering remote laboratories; and utilise industry-recognised materials-selection software.

Engineering: origins, methods, context

This introductory module examines the range of human activity that is 'engineering', setting current practice in a historical context and looking forward to new developments that will help shape the future. Key scientific principles, mathematical techniques and design methodologies are introduced and explained, to equip you with a basic toolkit on which to build further study. Mathematics is presented in an engineering context to emphasise relevance and build your confidence in framing problems, addressing design challenges and formulating solutions. Reflective practice is encouraged throughout and you will have the opportunity to share and discuss aspects of your work with other students.
