What is TED?

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at

What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

TEDxMiltonKeynes Themes

Jane Ordaz-Stubbs, member of the TEDxMiltonKeynes Organising committee explains the themes of the event:

"Our conversations began with wanting to explore how to celebrate communities in Milton Keynes in a way that might help some new ideas to emerge and to connect us to other communities and people locally, nationally and internationally. We wanted to look in, up and out.

"We felt that although the economic climate was creating real difficulties for people there was also a sense that communities were responding by making their own changes and supporting each other. We felt a great sense of optimism in this and wanted to bring to life a 'community event' with a difference: one that would celebrate and invest in ideas, just like TED!

"We all believe ideas are the currency that drives our imaginations. It seemed the right time to put on stage a group of people who felt empowered and had taken actions and had views and opinions on the power of community in varying ways."
