9 Building engagement in a marine context

Rewilding in the marine context means working with a wide range of stakeholders. As you saw in Module 3, there are different categories of stakeholders that are relevant in all contexts.

Click on each of the headings below to see the types of people in each category in a marine context:

• Stewards and land managers

  Traditional users of the sea, fishers and those with fishing rights.

• Local governance

  Often a marine department within or parallel to a wider terrestrial or environmental department.

• Residents

  Coastal communities who make use of the sea for wellbeing and recreation, and who may be consumers of fish and other marine products.

• Local businesses and enterprises

  Who rely on the sea and its resources for their income, such as water-based sports, fishers, marine-based tourism such as boat tours, as well as industries and transport based in or near major ports.

• Teachers and students

  As education about ocean health is a critical tool in motivating people to value it.

• Researchers and research institutes

  It is critical to collect useful information that informs and supports marine and coastal rewilding.
