1. Module Introduction

Leadership isn’t only about vision or strategy — it’s also about how you communicate and influence others.

For neurodivergent leaders, communication can be a strength (clear, direct, honest) but also a challenge (misunderstandings, sensory overload, or different styles of interaction).

This module helps you:

  • Understand different communication styles

  • Explore ways to influence others authentically

  • Practice strategies that suit your strengths

2. Communication Styles

Different people prefer different communication styles. Examples include:

  • Direct and concise – clear instructions, minimal detail

  • Detailed and thorough – full background information

  • Visual and structured – diagrams, charts, or lists

  • Conversational and social – informal, relationship-focused

Reflection Prompt (Journal):

Which communication style feels most natural for you?

3. Neurodivergent Strengths in Communication

Neurodivergent communication styles can add real value:

  • Clarity – straightforward, no hidden meanings

  • Honesty – building trust through transparency

  • Unique framing – bringing fresh metaphors or explanations

  • Detail orientation – providing accuracy and depth

At the same time, challenges might include sensory overload in meetings, difficulty with unspoken rules, or managing tone in emails.

4. Influence Without Authority

Influence isn’t about being the boss — it’s about building trust and shaping outcomes. Leaders influence by:

  • Sharing expertise

  • Modelling behaviours (e.g., fairness, persistence)

  • Building strong relationships

  • Advocating for values

💬 Reflection Prompt (Journal):

Think of a time when you influenced someone’s decision without being “in charge.” What did you do?

5. Practical Strategies for Communication

Tips for neurodivergent leaders:

  • Prepare notes before meetings to stay focused

  • Use visuals or bullet points in presentations

  • Ask colleagues their preferred communication style

  • Practise “active listening” — summarise back what you heard

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification
