Real-World Transformation Case Studies

In this module you will apply what you have learned to two documented PMO transformations.

Estimated study time: about 50 minutes. Suggested week: 9.

9.1 Case study 1: a European CPMO build (Belgium HQ)

This case study covers the creation of a unified PMO service. The work included:

  • Unified PMO service design
  • ISO and GDPR alignment
  • Governance frameworks
  • People development
  • Ownership of the PM platform
  • Strategic impact

The result was a unified, compliant and scalable service.

Questions to consider: which Wheel domain does each element belong to? Which Module 3 and Module 4 ideas could you see at work?

9.2 Case study 2: a PMO turnaround

Here, a PMO was failing its SLAs and KPIs, and revenue was at minus 10%. The turnaround involved a delivery model reset, a governance redesign and cultural transformation.

Results of the turnaround
Measure Result
Delivery 30% improvement
Customer satisfaction (CSAT) From 3 to 7
Revenue From -10% to +15%
SLA achievement 100%
Project status Most projects moved from red to green

Questions to consider: the delivery model reset sits mainly in Planning & Control, the governance redesign in Governance & Assurance and the cultural transformation in People, Skills & Culture. Which results show Value, Strategy & Outcomes?

Key points

  • Each case study can be read through the four domains of the Wheel.
  • Turnarounds combine process, governance and culture change.
  • Results should be measured in the way you set out in Module 6

Activity: Turnaround

Design your own PMO turnaround plan.

  • Diagnose: what is failing, and what evidence shows it?
  • Reset delivery: what would you change first?
  • Redesign governance: which decisions and forums need fixing?
  • Change culture: which behaviours need to change?
  • Define your results measures and targets.

Write your answer in your own notes or learning journal. Use the ideas in this module to check your thinking.
