Week 1 Activity 3

‘Leadership is a collaborative, political and participative practice that provides direction, energy and critical engagement on issues that are made to matter.’

I on the whole agree with this definition. My only issue would be with the word 'critical'. This to me has negative connotations and as a leader I feel you should be positive to maintain a happy team.

My own definition would be, 'Leadership is engaging, empowering and inspiring a team to follow and improve a vision of what needs to be done.'

Hi Steven - I understand your concern that the word 'critical' can sound negative.  It's a word we use a lot in academic circles and it reappears in the courses - not to be negative, but rather to encourage leadership that assesses, considers, takes account of different arguments and perspectives, and so forth.  It would be interesting to know if you think differently about this word as you read on.
