Activity 2.8 Interactive teacher education

Use this thread to tell us two ways in which you could make your own teaching more interactive

Ganiyat Adesina-Uthman Post 2 in reply to 1

I could and I have actually been making my class interact with case studies which brings theory and practice into focus.

Engaging learners in individual and group studies leading to presentations of their ideas and findings on subject matters enhances active learning and enquiries that promote  critical

thinking.

Group work  is actually very good to manage class classes. You have actually made a good choice of method

Thank you Ganiyat.

I like case studies too because they follow the human instinct for stories and help us discuss alternative options in  a safe way.

I love case studies too as they often provide a window on reality, enabling us to visualise how what we read or hear works.

Two ways to make my Teaching more interactive

1. I will use role play: I will call for two students to volunteer to play two known roles in counselling session. The role of the counsellor and the role of a client. I would have given them resources to read for the skills required in establishing rapport(acceptance) in counselling.  I will give the other students scoring sheet with  scoring guidelines: Opening, greetings, acceptance and questioning skills. The other learners will assess how these skills are demonstrated during the session. Roles will be changed and students will be given opportunity to participate in any of their choice. I will provide feedback and summarize the session.

2. I will use  Learning management system: I will upload my course on either google classroom or moodle.  I will insert collaborative activities in the discussion forums, blogs and wikis. I will schedule live chats to provide additional learning supports to my students. I will share my link with  the students and ask them to contribute to discussions and reply to at least 3 post.

Beautiful. Roleplay is interactive indeed. The idea of 2 learners to act out the roles is good because a platform like zoom has issues with chorus answers

Two ways to make teaching more interactive include: setting the right classroom atmosphere and asking the right questions as well as answering/ giving feedback to questions and concerns from students.

Great ideas, Samson! The two ways you have chosen to make your own teaching more interactive are:

  • set the right classroom atmosphere
  • ask the right questions

What made you chose these? What sort of practical steps would you actually take?

I would make my own teaching interactive by using a powerpoint presentation and posing slides for students to discuss concepts to sharpen their understanding. Likewise I will offer motivation by creating value to class interaction where I grade students based on their participation in class.

I will make my teaching interactive by dividing the learners into groups and given them what to discuss on.For example, on mathematics, talking about properties of 2or 3 dimensional shapes. The learners  are given different shapes and are instructed to find the properties of each shapes. Each of the group are ask to present their findings .This make members of the other groups to learn about the properties of the shapes they were not given.

I usually make my classes interactive by use of Think pair share method. In the online live sessions they normally use the chat forum. In the asynchronous case we use the discussion forums. We also use group discussions and presentations. I have also used role play and peer assessment especially in micro-teaching. The flipped classroom has worked for me. I have also used Case studies.

In making the teaching more interactive,

i will use learners group discussion   by giving children appropriate tasks which will make each member of the group to work  to an  understanding. Questioning and answers is going to be the second method.

Patriciah mentions the 'flipped classroom'. It has been mentioned our discussions as well. Can anyone give us an example of how they have used this approach?

I could give the learners materials for the next lesson. Guided questions that can help them make notes.

On the D-day, we go through the guided questions as we discuss and construct together the learning objects or rather contents.

So both the teacher and learners ot idea of what the lesson is about

Monioluwa Olaniyi Post 22 in reply to 12

30 July 2020, 1:34 PM

I engage the learners with online resources links that they can access in their own time and ask them to get ready to discuss the material in the next class. So the learners study at home and we have group interaction in the class afterwards.

giving discussion question to students ,grouping them in small groups to tackle the questions

* grouping the students into smaller unit which would give each student a chance for active participation.

* presentation of the learning outcome of each group will be done, while all other members of the group stand to answer one or two question generated from the listeners.

  • Always link previous knowledge (entry behaviour) with the new topic
  • Allow learners to contribute ideas and let their peers critique will you facilitate

I have always preferred to give tasks in groups and them learners are given an opportunity to present there work, usually, during these presentations, the class sits as a whole but i have always suspected it is ineffective. The example we have been given looks effective, with each group having a representative from other groups and hence with such small numbers, it is possible for group members to remain focused. Another error i have been making is the failure to break down my question into clear components and hence i would end up with a 'junk' of information. This will change moving forward.

Helen Hendry Post 27 in reply to 26

Hello Nila, I think you are right. I have had the same experience with group presentations in the past, where the students are not really listening. When I changed the lesson to involve sending representatives to find out information from different groups it was more engaging and effective. I also agree it is very easy to ask too much in one question. I know I have sometimes done this too! I'm glad the task has helped you to plan some simple changes to make teaching more interactive.

Two ways I could make my class more interactive is by encouraging my students to bring in their prior knowledge of a subject through the use of questions. By asking some questions at the beginning of a lesson, one can actually get the students to open up and discuss their perspectives on the subject. Another way to make the class interactive, is to get the learners to demonstrate part of the lesson for about 10 mins.

Michele Deane Post 33 in reply to 32

Encouraging students to bring in their prior knowledge of a subject through the use of questions is a great idea.

We have used this technique in the course.

We have also used other strategies to enable you to bring your beliefs and knowledge about a topic to the surface. You may want to review them and reflect on how you could adapt (and adopt) these in your practice.

Interactive Teacher Education

One of the way I will make my class more interactive is to find out about what students already know, I will encourage them to feel free in expressing their ideas and promote mutual respect among them.

the second way is to make students present their assigned tasks to smaller groups as highlighted in the case study. Although I have been involving my students in active learning process by assigning them task and having them make presentation to larger class but interacting with smaller group will promote their self-confidence, assume more responsibility and it will be more interactive

Thanks for sharing these ideas Mulikat. It will be great to give students the chance to discuss what they already know. I wonder if you have any thoughts on how you might stimulate this opportunity in your classes?

This can be done by in cooperating ICT in my teaching through creating groups and online discussion forums where the students are encouraged to contribute. This can be enhanced further by providing resources that students can read and work on assignments individually and in groups.

I could do this, by implementing group work in the classroom, where all the students participates in the discussion.

And using power point presentation, during my teaching, whereby the slides are well prepared,, for students to get involved in the discussion.

I can use group work to better plan my teaching to giving each group an aspect of the task to work on. Then each group can present their findings.
