If the 'conventional' teacher is willing and open to positive and innovative changes in teacher-student interaction, then s/he must be ready to assume the role the application of ICT in education presents to him/her.

The student have access (courtesy of the internet technology) to endless ocean of information on any given subject matter. The best the teacher can do in this circumstance is to ensure that the student do not loose focus of the subject mater at hand.

In other words, the teacher guides, moderate discussions, advises on way forward, asks prompting, probing, leading, provoking questions. On the long run, the student has little or no option not to get involved.

Introduction of ICT to educational sector cannot but be embarrassed especially as COVID_19 ravages the world. Most learners who are lucky that their institution have embarrassed and introduced technology to teachers and learners continue their studies without hindrance such that at the end of the semester, online examination on demand were made available. Those institutions especially the public school students are lagging behind. ICT has come to make learning and teaching easier, and also as additional skill that enhances active learning and learners' participation in learning.

Integrating ICT into the curriculum

In Nigeria, our digital literacy is being built through the incorporation of information and communication technology (ICT) into schools. Some common ways our Ministry Of Education has designed to intergrate ICT  include:

One laptop per child: Less expensive laptops have been designed for use in school on a 1:1 basis with features like lower power consumption, a low cost operating system, and special re-programming and mesh network functions. Despite efforts to reduce costs, however, providing one laptop per child may be too costly for some developing countries

Tablets: Tablets are small personal computers with a touch screen, allowing input without a keyboard or mouse. Inexpensive learning software (“apps”) can be downloaded onto tablets, making them a versatile tool for learning. Interactive White Boards or Smart Boards: Interactive white boards allow projected computer images to be displayed, manipulated, dragged, clicked, or copied. Simultaneously, handwritten notes can be taken on the board and saved for later use. Interactive white boards are associated with whole-class instruction rather than student-centred activities.

 E-readers: E-readers are electronic devices that can hold hundreds of books in digital form, and they are increasingly utilized in the delivery of reading material. Students—both skilled readers and reluctant readers—have had positive responses to the use of e-readers for independent reading

Flipped Classrooms: The flipped classroom model, involving lecture and practice at home via computer-guided instruction and interactive learning activities in class, can allow for an expanded curriculum.

There has been much discussion about the use of computer labs in terms of the flexibility it affords and the cost of maintenance and update of hardware. Computers have evolved a lot, and the computers we used to find in computer labs may not be the desirable models we want to present.

I cannot help thinking that my present smart phone is so much more powerful, flexible and dare I say attractive in terms of what it can do and the way it presents that the computers that were available in my school. If we did a poll on the technology we have at our disposal, I am not sure the desktop computer would come top!

Integrating ICT Into Teaching and Learning

The successful integration of ICT into the learning environment depends on the ability of teachers to structure learning in new ways, to merge technology appropriately with a pedagogy, develop socially active classrooms, and encourage co-operative interaction and collaborative learning and group work.

For many, this requires a different set of skills from those they currently possess, especially when they are not all that experienced on what to do. People are limited in what they don't know because you cannot give what you don't have. Once you can successfully integrate ICT into learning environment, t makes the learning process easy & friendly.

This is reflected in Activity 3.1, Case Study 1 Mr Shabukali’s story. It was mentioned in the story that school has just installed digital projectors and all staff are being encouraged to use them in their classes. But Mr Shabukali is not very happy about this because he is not very experienced with using technology, but decides that he will make a PowerPoint for his next English lesson. He  made mistakes in some slides during the presentation due to his limitations and imperfect way of preparing power-point presentations as follows:

1) The table he made in the slides was not legible enough for students at the back of the class to see so that they can copy it in their notebooks as instructed by him. Mr Shabukali is a very strict teacher and the students are nervous about telling him so they saidnothing.

2) He later sat at his desk looking at his laptop and realized that he has made two mistakes on the first slide and  the next slide, though the students did not notice.

3) He quickly switched off the laptop and tells the students to open their books and do the exercise on page 21.

4) Because he is a very strict teacher, he did not:

a)develop socially active classrooms

b)encourage co-operative interaction and collaborative learning

c)group work.

All he needed to do had it been he is very experienced/computer literate  was:

1) developed the little skill & knowledge he has on computer to make manipulation easy for him in the preparation of lessons on power point.

2) Increase the font size of the table in the slides and also press ctrl F5 or the small icon looking like a small cup on the downward part of the computer on the right hand size to expand each slide for projection and presentation.

3) To end the show and correct the mistakes on the particular slide, save the corrections & then click again to expand the slides for projection and presentation.

4) Create an enabling, friendly and active learning environment.

I teach Developmental Psychology. And there are about 15 topics in this course. In using ICT I encourage my students to have laptops and smart phones. I too I have the same gadgets, including a CD-Rom with the entire course that I was given while teaching the same course at another university. with all these resources, I begin my classes by introducing the lesson, followed by casting of the introductory pages on the CD-Rom. then divide the learners into learning groups whereby I distribute the topics to the groups. Each group researches on the topic using OER on the internet and library books and prepares a power point presentation. As presentations are effected, I usually sum up with summary presentations and discussions, and show the CD-Rom contents as well. All the groups have to present and discuss their work. Meanwhile, I also form take away discussants for each topic to be researched on by all members of the class, so that the learners fully acquaint themselves with the entire course. This brings in the interactive nature of the course both content wise and pedagogically. We also form a whatsapp group for the course for continual support and interactions. Some other materials are then uploaded on to the LMS of the university for further reading and timed assignments. This brings in a whole host of approaches in teaching and learning that combines the traditional and ICT methods.

In the discipline of Geology when talking about the different types of rocks I can use ICT to:

1. Actively involve students in carrying out activities because technology allows the comparison between theory and practice, simulating scenarios using photos of different types of rocks;

2. Record the activities carried out in the identification of the characteristics of the rocks so that students can review and consolidate their learning, using cell phone to obtain images and tablet or computer to write and share notes;

3. Motivate students because ICT allows to use animations, images, audio and videos of different types of rocks, consolidating learning;

4. Encourage the sharing of resources among students, which can be power points and videos on the rocks they photograph in the regions where they live;

5. Streamline collaborative and group activities because it is fun and less tiring to study the rocks using a projector;

I was impressed by how much a mobile phone can do to enhance a lesson that would otherwise be dull. It is low cost and always available but the teacher's creativity in its application is impressive. I am now confident of using technology in my teaching at least cost.

That's great Ignatius. Have you got any ideas for a specific lesson or topic that you could teach with some use of a mobile phone?

Integrating ICT in curriculum

ICT has great potential to keep learners engaged in almost every learning area. It does not have to be sophisticated, I could start with with whatever i have - computer and internet connectivity. Even smart phones could be used to make learning environment engaging and exciting.  Almost everybody uses phones and we could talk to school authorities to allow phones in class - take photos , videos and use them for teaching.

The use of ICT in the educational systems is indeed very important in that it enriches the learning environment for the learners by providing  extra avenues of learning other than the teacher.

I agree Jacob, that the learning with ICT could be more independent or focused on group work so it offers some additional ways of learning. How could you use ICT in the curriculum you teach? Do you have an example of something you have done or would like to do?

Effective use of technology in class creates opportunity for peer support and peer teaching which scaffold learning other than the teacher.

True. Peer teaching also eliminates the feeling of isolation among learners and contributes to building communities.

I have just realised through this section that there is a variety of ICTs available to use to engage our students in more meaningful and interactive ways as well as facilitiate collaborative learning. mobile phones, tablets, laptops and so on. however there are challenges that need to be addressed at national and institutional level to take full advantage of this. First  is making internet connectivity available to facilitate distant online learning and sharing of content. secondly, the school environment and administrative support to make the application of ICTs  possible. True, covid 19 has plunged teachers and students to more reliance on ICTs so going forward capacities need to be built. Not all teachers realise the rich potential in ICTs in instructional and administrative management of learning. this course is an eye opener.

Hi Elizabeth, I'm really glad to read that this course has made you think positively about different ways to use ICT and the importance of supporting teachers in doing so.

Are there any specific ways that you think ICT could be used to enhance a topic in the curriculum you teach? Perhaps in a way that could help teachers to realise the potential of ICT?

I use my institution's LMS which has a  lot of options within it, for example, creating lessons, holding virtual classes, uploading material but the option i want to try out most is screencasting.  I haven't used it before but i have seen how it works so it is something i would like to incorporate into my teaching.

How do you think that might enhance the learners' experience, Nila, and help them learn better and you be more effective in your mission?

Bitmojis!? This is new to me, Emmanuel. I have googled the word and found out what it is. My question is now, how would you use this in teaching and how would it enhance pupil learning and experience?

Risk management topic in events management can use ICT, specifically, videos of scenarios depicting equipment not well placed that cause disaster, the reactions of the guests and how the situation was handled. In addition, powerpoint presentations can be used to show the process or steps used in mitigating risks. Cameras can be used to take photographs of scenes depicting risks and laptops and smart forms can be used for discussion forums.

One requirement of the course is that student teachers develop lesson plans. So I often ask them to submit three different types of lesson plans for different topics in their preferred subject over time. However, they have to present one of the lessons to the class in a micro-teaching session. I have found this a very useful means of getting students to use ICT in their course without even realising that this is one of the unintended consequences.

Elizabeth Buluku Post 75 in reply to 74

The lesson plans should include ways they are using ICT to enhance learning. Specifically how learners will be engaged in the use of ICT devices or even the software.

Asking student-teachers to plan a lesson including a compulsory element in this case ICT is a really useful ploy. Do you ask them to provide, after having taught the lesson, an account of how the lesson went and to reflect on how he lesson could have been improved?

Thank you Felicia, having a video as a starting point for discussion could be a good approach. What sort of tasks or questions would you use to get your students to engage with it interactively?

I would like to teach speech acts. Since i plan to teach my students online, I will use power point slides to set up my class. Then I will incorporate a video or film to show the students practically how language users employ speech acts to demonstrate how utterances are employed in communicative situations to perform actions

Thanks Felicia. I think that will work really well. Is there anyway that students can follow up this film example using ICT. I am thinking about them recording their own examples on a phone and sharing these in a group to show they understand? Just an idea!

I could teach Food groups to my students by first developing  a video covering various food groups. These will be supported by power point slides. The slides will have embedded images of  food groups. All these will be uploaded onthe elearning platform. I will then give the students an assignment for them to take pictures of various food groups and post them inthe group discussion forum. Every student will be required to comment on another students post before they can post theirs.

My lesson will therefore be learner centred and I will have enrichened my asynchronous lessons(my students are working and synchronous teaching can't work for them).

integration of ICT in the Classroom

From what I have learnt I can help my student to use ICT to:

i) access and find relevant information

ii) use ICT to network and collaborate

iii) write and analyze information

iv) use variety of tools for their study

Re-engineering and transforming the education domain - This is and should be the fundamental role and purpose of ICT in the educational sector. We are already in an era where the design and development of educational technologies will be the key factor in shaping and influencing the educational landscape.

  • I will create LMS using moodle or google classroom,or Edmodu
  • I will embed instructional videos, pictures, images and musics into the content.
  • I will  create online groups and build wikis, participate in online collaborative activities with my students , and apply technology-enhanced assessments e.g. socratives, concept mapping, poll everwhere to assess the learners etc.

Topic on network devices under a course on networking.

Using a camera, i can take photos of the devices used in the campus. I can ask learners to identify where these devices have been used within the campus.

I can also use a simulation application to show how messages travel during an email communication. This way, the abstract concept will be well understood by the learners. Using you tube videos on demonstrate the same concept will also make the concept well understood.

When i am teaching education sysems of education, ICT would provide me with assistance through Videos  explaining about education in the country understudy. The video will bring the country understudy into the classroom level without necessarily going to the said country. This will further be enhanced by documents that are in OERs about the country to explain it further.

A topic from the curriculum I teach: Adolescent and their Environment

How I could use ICT to enhance my teaching of this topic:

-  By using a word processing application on the interactive whiteboard while conducting a discussion with the class.

- By ensuring that students uses a laptop computer.

- By ensuring that lesson is centered on the students activities and values.
