A

Agricultural advisor

Provides services for a variety of clients such as farmers, feed companies, landowners, agricultural manufacturers and businesses, and many others by gathering, reviewing, reporting and making recommendations based on their findings to help increase yields, improve efficiency and reduce losses. 

Agri-environment schemes

Provide funding to farmers and land managers to farm in a way that supports biodiversity, enhances the landscape, and improves the quality of water, air and soil.

AKIS

(Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System): The collection of agricultural information providers, the flows of information between them, and the institutions regulating these relations.

Co-creation

The collaborative development of new concepts, solutions, products and/or services together with experts and/or stakeholders.

D

Design thinking

Is a method for practical, creative resolution of problems.

E

Ecosystem services

The services, outputs, conditions, or processes of natural systems that directly or indirectly benefit humans or enhance social welfare.

European Commission

The politically independent executive arm of the European Union (EU).

Facilitation

Is a set of skills to be used in working with a group, enabling and supporting them to achieve their objectives in a way that involves and respects all contributions, builds ownership and support the potential of the group and its members. 

Farm advisory services

The set of organisations that enable farmers to develop farm-level solutions, enhance skills and coproduce knowledge with advisors.  

Farmer

A producer of agricultural commodities.

ICT

Information and Communications Technology – technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications.

Innovation

The implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service), or process, a new marketing method, or a new organisational method in business practices, workplace organisation or external relations.

Knowledge

Facts, information, understanding and skills acquired through experience or education or research; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. 

L

Learning

The acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience, or being taught.

Living Lab

A partnership in which businesses, authorities, citizens and other relevant stakeholders work together to create, validate, and test new services, business ideas, markets and technologies in real-life-contexts.

Open innovation

The form of innovation that promotes collaboration with people and organisations outside one particular company or organisation. 

R

Reflexive monitoring

Combines the concepts of reflexivity, a ‘second order’ process in which the observer sees her/himself as a part of the situation rather than apart from it, and monitoring. 

S

SCAR

The European Commission’s Standing Committee on Agricultural Research. 

Stakeholder

Any individual, social group, or actor who possesses an interest, a legal obligation, a moral right, or other concern in the decisions or outcomes of an organisation or a multi-organisation project or programme.

Sustainable agriculture

Practices which are economically viable, environmentally beneficial, and yield appreciable benefits to society, while not limiting the potential of future generations to meet their own needs.

Systems thinking

Is a way of thinking about and acting in the world through the use of holistic representations of what we, individually and/or collectively, perceive about situations.
