4.3 Widening interest in multimodal texts

As an academic area of study, multimodality has attracted increasing interest over the last decade or so. This interest stems from a number of factors, including:

• the number and type of multimodal texts has increased dramatically
• we need to understand and be ‘literate’ in reading multimodal texts
• we need to understand how and why such texts are produced.
