Question bank organisation

1 Question bank organisation

Get organised. If you are going to put effort into writing questions then it's very much worth your while to learn the Moodle tools for organising them and storing them.

Start by opening your practice course in your browser.

You will find the Question bank at the bottom of the Administration panel for your Moodle course.

Click on the triangle to open the Question bank menu. If you click on the words 'Question bank' then you will open the bank and will need to scroll back to the menu.

You will see four entries. We are going to start with 'Categories'. Click on it to open the category editor.

1.1 Contexts

Figure 1.2 The main questions category for the website

Note that Moodle refers to 'The default category for questions shared in context ''. There are in fact several 'contexts' but here just the website context is shown. My advice is to keep your questions in the website for the course that they will be used in.

1.2 Creating your own categories

At the bottom of the 'Edit categories' page is the 'Add categories' box. This course will show you how to write interactive questions so please create a category called 'interactive' in the context of your course.

The result should be similar to that shown in the figure.

By adding more categories, all with meaningful labels, you can use the 'Edit categories' page to build your filing system.

Given that this course has lots of questions you should not be surprised to learn that they are organised into lots of categories as shown in Figure 1.4.
