Effective communication

Two smiling faces with arrows pointing to each other illustrate an equal exchange of information between two parties – balanced and equitable. Effective communication includes turn-taking and responsive exchanges.

Ineffective communication

A puzzled face and a sad face with arrows pointing towards a question mark illustrate where communication is limited or impaired and individual struggles to communicate, meanwhile staff/carers lack skills and knowledge to bridge the gap in communication.

Facilitated communication

Two smiling faces with arrows pointing to a question mark illustrate where communication is limited or impaired. But staff/carers are aware of the difficulties and are skilled in communication methods that will bridge the gap and enable the individual to make themselves heard and facilitate more effective communication.
