Section 3: Galaxies

Galaxies

Galaxies are huge, distant objects made up of hundreds of billions of stars, dust, and gas, held together by gravity.

This section starts by looking at the shapes of galaxies and how you can contribute to research in this area by participating in a project called Galaxy Zoo. We will then look at what holds galaxies together and explain how observations of galaxies indicate the presence of dark matter in the Universe. Finally we will look at what happens when galaxies collide together and what this means for the fate of our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
