00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:04.400
There's this awesome functionality
within Final Cut Pro called "roles."

00:00:04.400 --> 00:00:08.000
It allows you to organize your clips in
a very unique way. I'll show you how.

00:00:09.840 --> 00:00:14.400
The roles feature is a great tool that
helps you keep your timeline organized.

00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:18.240
You may have noticed that the clips
in our timeline are assigned colors.

00:00:18.800 --> 00:00:24.787
These colors correspond to the default roles that Final Cut Pro assigns to our clips when we import them.

00:00:25.520 --> 00:00:27.647
This clip is purple for the title.

00:00:29.083 --> 00:00:31.342
This clip is dark blue for video.

00:00:32.480 --> 00:00:35.366
This audio clip is blue for dialogue.

00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:39.199
This clip is teal for sound effects.

00:00:39.758 --> 00:00:42.059
And this clip is green for music.

00:00:44.400 --> 00:00:52.942
When you import clips, Final Cut Pro will
automatically analyze and assign roles if you have the assign role setting set to "automatic."

00:00:55.120 --> 00:00:59.440
For the most part Final Cut Pro is pretty
accurate at assigning the correct role.

00:01:00.400 --> 00:01:07.600
But for items like this sound effect, it may
categorize it incorrectly as a dialogue clip.

00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:11.863
So if a role is assigned
incorrectly, how do you fix it?

00:01:12.320 --> 00:01:13.632
Well, let's show you.

00:01:16.320 --> 00:01:19.680
Start by selecting the clip that
you want to assign a new role to.

00:01:20.880 --> 00:01:23.680
Then, navigate to the Inspector on the top right.

00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:27.840
If the Inspector is not
visible, click on this icon.

00:01:30.371 --> 00:01:32.480
And click on the audio Inspector button.

00:01:34.148 --> 00:01:37.209
Then, locate the "audio configuration" section.

00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:46.952
To change the assigned role
for an audio component, click its roles pop-up menu and choose a different sub-role.

00:01:47.600 --> 00:01:50.668
This is a sound effect, so we'll choose
"Effect."

00:01:52.179 --> 00:01:56.080
After assigning a new role, the clip's color will update in the timeline.

00:01:58.720 --> 00:02:04.000
An even faster way to assign roles is hold
"Control" and click on the clip in the timeline.

00:02:05.600 --> 00:02:11.137
Then choose "Assign Audio Roles,"
then choose a role from the sub menu.

00:02:13.600 --> 00:02:20.945
We hope that learning about roles in Final
Cut Pro has helped you organize your clips and get you going a little bit quicker on your next project.
