00:00:01.200 --> 00:00:03.680
Hello and welcome back to
another Final Cut Pro tutorial!

00:00:03.680 --> 00:00:08.960
Today we're going to learn how to re-link
media and fix the dreaded red screen image.

00:00:11.120 --> 00:00:15.615
You might get a missing files error if
the source media was moved or modified.

00:00:16.400 --> 00:00:20.720
We'll go over how to fix this issue
and re-link any files that are missing.

00:00:22.720 --> 00:00:27.360
Let's start by taking a look at where exactly our source media is located.

00:00:28.240 --> 00:00:30.400
Select the clip you want
to locate in your browser.

00:00:32.800 --> 00:00:35.680
Then, hold "Control" and click on the selected clip.

00:00:37.680 --> 00:00:43.840
In the menu, choose "Reveal in Finder" or
use the shortcut "Shift + Command + R."

00:00:46.800 --> 00:00:54.382
If you're having trouble finding the clip you want in the browser, you can hold "Control" and click on
any clip directly in the timeline.

00:00:57.040 --> 00:00:59.040
Then choose "Reveal in Browser."

00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:04.730
This will pre-select the clip in the browser.

00:01:05.868 --> 00:01:08.532
And from here, you can reveal it in the Finder.

00:01:12.800 --> 00:01:17.986
Choosing "Reveal in Finder" will open a Finder window and show us where our source media is stored.

00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:22.640
Here, we can manage our source files how we want.

00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:25.840
If we modify the name of the project...

00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:33.143
...you might expect it to break the link in the
browser.

00:01:33.758 --> 00:01:36.209
But if we go back and check Final Cut Pro...

00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:41.040
...the media files remain linked and no errors occur.

00:01:42.080 --> 00:01:45.738
But let's see what happens when we reorganize
the source location.

00:01:46.339 --> 00:01:47.528
We'll create a new folder....

00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.595
....and name it hiking footage.

00:01:55.798 --> 00:01:59.540
And then, we'll create a copy of all our hiking footage.

00:02:05.360 --> 00:02:11.200
Paste it in the new folder and delete the old footage.

00:02:16.640 --> 00:02:23.200
Going back to Final Cut Pro, we will see an error
screen for the source files that were moved.

00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:27.360
To fix this, we need to re-link our clips.

00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:36.560
Select a clip you want to relink, then navigate up to the top menu, choose "File," and "Relink Files."

00:02:38.880 --> 00:02:42.720
This will open a "Relink Files" window in the center of your screen .

00:02:43.760 --> 00:02:46.240
We can see the name of the clip we want to relink.

00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:53.360
Select "Locate All" and this Finder window will appear.

00:02:56.150 --> 00:03:03.128
In the folder "Hiking Footage," we'll select the corresponding file that we moved earlier and click "Choose."

00:03:06.240 --> 00:03:10.383
Down here, we can confirm if the re-linked files matches the clip.

00:03:11.325 --> 00:03:14.404
If everything looks good, click "Re-link Files."

00:03:15.594 --> 00:03:19.955
The media files will be relinked, and the error message is now fixed.

00:03:22.160 --> 00:03:24.960
We can also relink multiple missing files at once.

00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:28.828
We'll select the rest of the files that
are missing.

00:03:31.691 --> 00:03:36.000
Select "File" and "Relink Files."

00:03:39.760 --> 00:03:42.885
You'll see that all the clips selected are in the list.

00:03:44.494 --> 00:03:46.115
Click "Locate All."

00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:56.340
Because they're all in the same folder, if we choose one of the missing files, Final Cut Pro will automatically detect the other missing media.

00:03:57.677 --> 00:04:01.686
We can also confirm that Final Cut Pro matched the correct source files.

00:04:02.889 --> 00:04:05.901
Everything looks good, so we'll relink the files.

00:04:08.720 --> 00:04:13.840
Now all the missing files have been re-linked
and we no longer have any red error screens.

00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:20.939
Wipe that sweat from off your brow, there is no more stress when attempting to re-link your footage.
