Video Description - Trout Broodstock Handling This video briefly shows eggs being expelled from a female rainbow trout into a metal bowl whilst the title of the video sequence is shown. That is "Handling broodstock: Rainbow trout spawning". The spawning sequence then starts with a brief view of the small rectangular bins containing anaesthetic. A male broodfish is removed by hand from the anaesthetic tank and washed briefly in a stock-tank water. It is then covered with a muslin bag and swiped on a PIT tag reader table for identification. The fish is then held flat by one husbandry worker and the ventral side squeezed from anterior to posterior in order to expel milt. This is collected in a small plastic bag by a second husbandry worker. The fish is then measured before being returned to the stock tank. A similar procedure is then shown with a female fish having its PIT tag read whilst being held in a muslin bag with the ventral side and reproductive duct opening exposed. The vent area is then wiped with a disinfectant prior to stripping. The same squeezing action along the lower body of the fish is used to expel eggs which are collected in a metal bowl held by a second husbandry person. Some eggs are then taken and placed in a separate container where previously collected sperm is added and mixed with the eggs. The batch is labelled and water added prior to transfer to hatching trays.
