Mingalabar! Welcome to Copyright and open licensing in Myanmar. We are delighted to welcome you to this course.

Who is this course aimed at?

This course has been designed especially for librarians, ICT and support staff at universities and colleges in Myanmar. It may also be of interest to educators, students and administrative staff. This course will introduce you to why copyright is important and how freely available materials that give you explicit permission to use in different ways could be useful for your colleagues and students.

There are lots of reasons why you might be interested in participating in this course:

  • Are you looking for ways to ensure that colleagues and students have access to relevant and interesting learning and teaching materials?
  • Perhaps you’ve been thinking about the changes happening in higher education (such as ‘one campus, two systems’, the move toward blended approaches in response to COVID-19) and how you can better support educators in providing learning resources.
  • Are you curious about what the new Myanmar copyright law means for your role and university?
  • Do you want to find out how to access or create resources that have no cost but are high quality and do not violate copyright?
  • Have you heard of open educational resources (OER), but are not really sure where to start or what they are?
  • Are you interested in hearing about, and sharing, experiences on how to use and develop learning and teaching resources?

You do not need to already know about (or even have heard of) Creative Commons, copyright, open licensing or other topics covered in the course before you participate.

Learning outcomes

By taking part in this course you will:

  • deepen your understanding of the new Myanmar copyright law and its implications for higher education
  • understand what Creative Commons is and why openly licensed content could be beneficial to your university
  • develop your understanding of how to use openly licensed resources
  • reflect on your own practice and how to support others in their use of openly licensed resources.

How to use the course material

This course is self-paced, which means you can work on it whenever suits you.

The course is structured into six units that comprise three or four sections. Learning outcomes are provided for each unit. Each unit should take around three hours to complete.

Each section of the course has reflection points, so you may want to write down your thoughts and ideas as the course progresses. At the end of every unit there is an end-of-unit quiz to test your understanding of the topics covered.
