    • Welcome to Safeguarding Essentials

This course is for Global Football Community Learners. It is part of the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Award.

      Dear Learner

We will be refreshing the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding courses on 31st January 2025. If you have started the courses towards earning your FIFA Guardians Football Award, you will need to complete all five by the end of January 2025 as we will not be able to transfer your record of progress towards the Award. After this date you will need to repeat any courses already completed! Thank you,

The Open University FIFA Guardians™ team (8th November 2024)

This course is an introduction to essential safeguarding knowledge for football and other sports. The course explains what safeguarding is, why it is important, and how you can help reduce safeguarding risks and respond appropriately to any safeguarding concerns.

It is divided into three 30-minute sessions for you to complete at your own pace. The course explains how safeguarding is everybody’s responsibility. It’s up to us!

It is important to know that completing this education programme will not guarantee sporting environments and activities to be 100% safe for children and young people. Inappropriately designed programmes and poor operational management can put children and youth at risk of harm. We hope that by taking this course, risk of harm can be identified and reduced and that everyone can participate in sport in a safe and supportive environment, free from all forms of harassment and abuse.

If you have a concern about the content of this course you can report it by clicking on the 'Report a concern' button.

This course is free and open to all, and though you are welcome to study it without enrolling, you will need to log in to be able to complete the declarations and survey and access the content.

If you also want to take the end-of-course quiz and earn a FIFA/OU course certificate and digital badge for your learning, you will need to do the following:

      1. Enrol on the course. Once you have done so, you’ll be returned to this screen.
      2. Complete (a) the two declarations about your eligibility to study the course and (b) the pre-course survey below.
      3. Complete the course content to the end. Ensure that every section has been completed and has a blue tick next to it. In the final section, click on the EXIT COURSE button to go to the end-of-course quiz page.
      4. Score 70% or higher in the end-of-course quiz. If you don’t pass it first time, you can retake the whole quiz again as many times as you need until you do pass.

Please note: This course is for Global Football Community Learners. If you are a Nominated FIFA learner, you need to enrol on the FIFA Learner pathway.
