A distinct sequence of nucleotides forming part of a chromosome that contains the instructions for the synthesis of a specific protein or functional RNA molecule. The order of these nucleotides determines the sequence of monomers in a polypeptide or nucleic acid molecule, thereby determining a particular trait or function within an organism.
