H

haemolysis

The breakdown of the red blood cells in blood agar by enzymes (hemolysins) produced by the growing bacteria. It is observed after incubation as a halo of discoloration around the bacterial colony. Bacteria can be non-haemolytic or produce partial (a green halo) or total (a translucent halo) haemolysis.
