A

antibiotic

Formally, a compound that is produced by or derived from a microorganism and that can be effectively used to kill or inhibit the growth of other microorganisms. The term is commonly used also for synthetic antimicrobial compounds; in this course, it is used as a synonym for 'antibacterial'.
