4.3 Inferential statistics

Inferential statistics allow us to make predictions (inferences) about a population, based on data collected from a sample. Examples of predictions of interest may be the value taken by an outcome variable given different sets of exposure variables. Null hypothesis testing is the basis of inferential statistics across scientific disciplines.
