5 Bacterial identification

Bacterial identification is the stepwise process by which a clinical isolate is assigned to a taxon, preferably, but not always, the species (see Section 5.2). Traditional diagnostic bacteriology relies heavily on phenotypic testing for identification, namely morphological (colony and cell morphology) and metabolic (biochemical) tests. Some rapid tests can be performed on the day of isolation and others require an additional incubation.
