Bacteria can be freeze-dried in central laboratories by suspending them in a lyophilisation medium and then freeze-drying the suspension. Freeze-drying is very useful as it allows bacterial long-term storage at room temperature and their transport without a continuous cold chain.

What are the disadvantages of freeze-drying?
