5.3 Summary of interventions

Figure 9 summarises some of the interventions mentioned in the previous sections. It also notes that interventions can be at the level of the infection itself, which is beyond the scope of this course.

The figure shows three types of interventions. General interventions are defined by antimicrobial time-outs, pre-authorisation and prospective audit feedback.

Pharmaceutical interventions are defined by automatic changes from intravenous to oral antimicrobial therapy, dose adjustment, automatic alerts in duplicate therapy, automatic stop orders, and detection and prevention of antimicrobial interactions with other drugs.

Infection-specific interventions are defined by improving antimicrobial prescribing for a specific syndromic treatment, such as community-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, MRSA infection from the community or Clostridium difficile infections.
