    • Agent-based energy systems modelling: MUSE

This course will help participants understand the types of investments that could be made to ensure a sustainable and secure energy system from a global or national perspective. Participants will learn how to use the energy system model, MUSE, to meet their energy system goals. MUSE uses a novel agent-based methodology to closely simulate the development of energy systems by allowing the analysis and comparison of different scenarios.

This course is intended for analysts, academics and civil servants who work or have an interest in energy policy and energy systems. The course was produced by the Sustainable Gas Institute at Imperial College London.

This is the March 2024 presentation of the course.

  • Course learning outcomes

The student will learn the fundamentals of energy systems modelling and how this applies to MUSE, an agent-based energy systems model. The student will then learn how to edit and create a custom case study through hands-on tutorials. This will put the student in a powerful position to perform detailed energy systems analyses using MUSE.

    Agent-based energy systems modelling: MUSE

The course is well-structured, starting with foundational concepts in energy modelling before diving into the architecture and use of the MUSE framework. It progresses logically through:

Basic principles of energy systems and modelling techniques

    Introduction to agent-based modelling

How MUSE differs from other models like TIMES or MARKAL

Sector-specific modules (e.g., power, transport, industry)

    Hands-on examples and case studies

The theoretical explanations are balanced with practical implementation, including coding sessions and model building exercises.
